What to do when Windows updates get stuck

Start with a restart

A normal restart can clear a pending update state. Make sure the device is connected to power and has a stable internet connection.

Check free storage

Feature and cumulative updates may need several gigabytes of free space. Low disk space can interrupt installation.

Use Windows Update history

The update history can show which update failed and may display an error code that helps narrow down the cause.

Avoid forcing shutdowns

If Windows clearly indicates that an update is actively installing, repeated forced shutdowns can create additional problems. If the screen has been unchanged for an unusually long time, seek support before taking aggressive steps.
